Why Talk About This?
WHY TALK ABOUT THIS?
WHY ME?
This conversation is for everyone who will face the end of their life and everyone involved in caring for them in the 21st century and beyond. Do you know if your family or healthcare staff will honor your wishes?
WHY NOW?
50% of our medical costs are incurrred in the last year of life. (And most don’t want to die in institutions.)
Over half of us are touched each year by the death of a close family member or friend.
90% of us will face healthcare decisions about end-of-life care.
By 2015, the population of aging and critically ill will be the highest in our lifetime. Our communities and systems will not be equipped to meet our needs without the awareness and demand from the general public AND a healthcare system whose staff are supported and trained to serve patients at end of life differently.
Avoiding these conversations isn’t working for anyone. If enough of us talk about it, we can join together to shift culture.
The best time to hold these conversations is now, not when someone is ill or dying. Traditional end-of-life planning won’t ensure these options exist. Do you know what you need to know to ensure compassionate options will be available for you and those you care about?
Programs Are For the Living!
Our programs are for the living. We are the ones holding or avoiding conversations with family members, friends, patients, clients, and loved ones. We are the ones living with the choices and outcomes of their care. We are the ones who want different options for our last days of living than many of those we’ve experienced in the realities of end-of-life care in 21st Century medicine.
Even with advance directives, statistics show that if we don’t learn to talk about what matters most with ourselves, our families, and our healthcare professionals, we will end our lives in institutions.
We are the ones who want options for our last days of living that are different than many of those we’ve experienced in the realities of end-of life care in 21st century.
